Thundercats 2005
EGO Flashback #1
Hello there! I hope this post finds you well. I’m trying something a little different this time by sharing art from much earlier in my career. So please read on and enjoy my first EGO Flashback.
Shortly after I moved to Los Angeles in 2005, I began visiting animation studios on the regular. I was learning how development worked, plus drumming up freelance jobs to support the California-sized increase in my cost of living.
That pursuit is how I landed meetings at Warner Brothers Animation. Back then, their offices were in the Sherman Oaks Galleria. So I’d wade through the crowd of mall shoppers and lunch breakers, eager to see what the cartoon fates had in store for me. And on one of those glorious visits I landed a dream a job: redesigning the Thundercats!
I was tasked with designing new takes on the core Cats, minus Tygra. As a child of the 80’s, I was hyped to do the work. So I rushed home and whipped up the batch of pencil drawings you see here.
While this isn’t how I’d approach the job today (in style or technique), I’m still proud of the enthusiasm I put into the work. And since this iteration of Thundercats never made it to the screen, I’m happy to share these drawings with you now.
Be well and stay tuned,
- Dave C.

perfect timing on this!!
A) i'm not sure i've ever seen these. is this the first time you share them to the general public?
B) there was a comic convention here in houston this weekend and the artist on the new flash series was one of the guests - Nick Robles. i gave him my flash sketchbook to contribute to and left it with him all day. i was working for Jeff Smith so i was pretty busy and wasn't able to make it back to him until the end of the day. when i did he said he flipped through it a few times and was dying to know who did that really exciting one at the beginning. I immidiately flipped to your's and asked "this one?". he jumped up and said yes!! that it was his favorite in there and loved it. so, i know you don't post much but you may have at least one new follower on instagram now. the next day you posted this. so perfect timing.
hope you are doing well and i look forward to the next memory!
